Montréal The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) is pleased to announce the names of the 12 young winners of its Test Your Financial IQ Contest.  The winners, who hail from each of the Canadian provinces and two territories, each won a prize of $750.  They are:

  • Andy Horne (British Columbia)
  • Ashleigh Bell (Alberta)
  • Amanda Lewis (Saskatchewan)
  • Marson Gabutero (Manitoba)
  • Simon Denis Morin (Ontario)
  • Jessica Béliveau (Québec)
  • Elizabeth Read (New Brunswick)
  • Alyssa Mitchell (Nova Scotia)
  • Justin O' Hanley ( Prince Edward Island)
  • Mark Powell (Newfoundland and Labrador)
  • Mariele dePeuter (Nunavut)
  • Kalie Brasseur (Northwest Territories)

The Test Your Financial IQ Contest, which is intended for Canadians from 15 to 21 years of age, took place from March 1 to 31, 2006.  The on-line contest featured questions and information on budgeting, saving and investing.  Participants were encouraged to learn about financial matters and answer questions using hyperlinks to useful sites.

With 21,815 contestants, this year's edition has shown once again that young Canadians are interested in becoming more knowledgeable about savings and investments.  I am delighted to note that young people are increasingly keen on matters related to savings and investments, said CSA Chair Jean St-Gelais.

Teachers were also invited to take part in the contest.  Many visited the contest website and took advantage of available tools as part of their classroom discussions.  By responding to the survey, some 100 teachers had a chance at winning a $100 gift certificate.

Young people can look forward to another edition of the CSA contest next year!
