CSA Welcomes William S. Rice as Chair of ASC

Montréal – William (Bill) S. Rice will be joining the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) in his role as Chair of the Alberta Securities Commission (ASC). He will take over his new duties with the ASC on July 18 for a renewable five-year term.

Mr. Rice succeeds Peter Valentine, who has served as interim Chair since May 9, 2005, and Stephen Sibold, who was ASC chair for the previous five years.

Prior to joining the ASC, Mr. Rice was the managing partner of Bennett Jones LLP, the largest law firm in Western Canada. His areas of practice included mergers and acquisitions, project finance, securities, and corporate governance. He has served as the chair or member of the board of directors of numerous public and private companies. Mr. Rice was called to the Alberta Bar in 1974 and has been with Bennett Jones his entire career.

His solid expertise will no doubt be an asset as we pursue our efforts to harmonize and streamline the Canadian regulatory system,” said CSA Chair Jean St-Gelais. “He can certainly count on our support in the performance of his new duties. We expect the ASC to continue to play a leadership role within the CSA ,” added Mr. St-Gelais.

The CSA, the council of the securities regulators of Canada’s provinces and territories, co-ordinates and harmonizes regulation for the Canadian capital markets.
